After Training

At this stage, your child has spent a few hours learning to toilet in the potty chair after having spent several years wetting his diapers or pants. Small wonder that a child might conclude that the brief training period was just a game and that pants wetting will be permitted the next day. The purpose of the After Training procedure is to teach your child that your concern about his toileting is permanent.

Pants Inspections After Training

For several days after training, continue to conduct pants inspections—especially during the first day or two, when your child understandably will be testing your changed attitude. Conduct a pants inspection before each meal, before between-meal snacks, before nap times, and before bedtime, providing about six or seven inspections each day. These events have been selected as inspection times because they are events that almost all children experience every day. If other events occur regularly in your family schedule—such as when a brother or sister returns from school at midafternoon, when you return from some activity, or when the father returns from work in the late afternoon—consider adding an inspection at those times.
